Day 574: Post Graduation Weigh In

Welcome to my retirement. From school.

It has been an intense two years, before that it was an intense fours and before that it was an intense 13 years (including preschool.) While grad school was a great challenge where I spent a majority of my time in the fetal position in UCC 3116 (but that’s just because it was -30 degrees in there,) there wasn’t a day that went by where I questioned if it was the right choice for me. Florida State helped me become a better student of my craft, helped me realize my calling and facilitated friendships that I will cherish forever. It feels like only yesterday I was talking to this black-haired goofball on the bus who convinced me to get Amazon Student to save money on my textbooks. Come to find out he would become a key source of support for my weight loss. I’ll also never forget that kid who sat behind me in class whose car was struck by lightning. Then there was that kid who looked so much like Edward Cullen. Finally, there was that kid who is one of the few people I know who can pull off saying their first and last time together. These four guys were in one of my first classes at Florida State. Thanks for being awesome guys.

So I have been getting the question “What’s next?” a lot lately. A fair question to ask a recent graduate. The answer is I don’t know. I have applied to my share of agencies, organizations and other establishments, but unfortunately so is everyone else. So right now, I’m going to start to losing weight like it’s my job. This is my time to establish some good habits from working out to eating better. This semester was rough. Heck, I gained about 5 pounds in the past two weeks. (Yes, I gained 2.2 pounds this week.) I’m ready to eat start counting points again. I have felt like a Weight Watchers hypocrite recently. I can’t remember I have reported my points on this blog! It’s crazy! And it’s time for that to change. Now I’m not saying I’m going to be perfect. That’s not going to happen. However, I have big plans for this blog and more importantly my life. My weight has gotten in the way of that and that’s going to change.

Alright, now that that’s all out of the way….

So here are some pictures of this past week with my folks and other stuff. Tomorrow, it’s getting better. Losing weight like a boss… of my life. Enjoy. See ya tomorrow.

Day 569: Just Checking In

Hello!

I’m going to keep this short if that’s okay with you for a couple of reasons. First, my body has made me readily aware of how old I am after a vicious two hours of racquetball. Second, MY PARENTS WILL BE HERE TOMORROW!!!!! So we have a lot to do to get ready for their arrival. I can tell they are excited because they keep sending me pictures of our dog Molly and our cat Shadow in their suitcases. (Parents are awesome.)

Anyway, so here is the rundown of today: breakfast was normal, lunch was a leftover burger and for dinner we walked to Super Perros for dinner where it was the manager’s sons birthday so we got free Star Wars cake! After that I played racquetball with my friend Alex M. and now I’m incredibly sore. I also had some nachos made at home. Awesomeness. So that’s about it, tomorrow I’ll have something a little more elaborate (with pictures) but that’s all I got for now. See ya tomorrow!

PS rice, beans and racquetball don’t mix. That is unless you want to use biological warfare win at racquetball.

Day 568: Monday Time!

So this was me the last time I graduated. Saturday, I will be looking a bit different in a cap and gown. I needed this picture this week. I needed to remember how far I’ve come. When I really look back, it makes me proud. I don’t look back to tell myself I will never look like that again, I already know that. What I do need to remember is that I can do it. This is my inspiration for the summer. My goal is to break in to the 100’s (yes, 100 with a 1) by my second blogoversary: September 18, 2o12. It’s going to take a lot of work, but I know it can be done. I mean, three years ago I had to order the biggest gown available. This year I ordered the middle sized one, the one normal people wear. I got this.

Breakfast: I had an english muffin with some peanut butter. Awesome.

Lunch: mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm… Megan made this delicious tortellini with a veggie marinara sauce for lunch. It was super filling and awesome.

Workout: This afternoon, I played racquetball with my friend Matt and Brian. It was the first time we had played all semester and it was insane. I sweated a crapton and I only collied with someone once. I love racquetball.

FroYo: This afternoon, I got a haircut on the other side of town where a new froyo place called Rainbow has opened up. Being the froyo fanatic I am, I had to give it a shot. I had the cupcake flavor mixed with vanilla along with some crushed up waffle cone, butterfinger and chocolate chips. It wasn’t too bad, but the decor is awesome and in the corner they had Hello Kitty iPad covers for sale. It can’t be that bad of a place. Plus froyo is 1/2 off on Mondays. Hard to beat.

Dinner: Tonight, we made a meal that would convert anyone in to believer in eating organic. On Saturday, we went to the Farmer’s Market on Market Square and we bought grain fed ground beef from a farm in South Georgia along with acre peas and green beans. Megan cooked the peas with some bacon from Earth Fare and a chopped onion. They were the best beans I have ever eaten. For all of my friends who can’t eat legumes, (Richard Keker) I am truly sorry. Anyway, I fired up the Weber and made burgers our of the beef and topped them with this awesome gouda that has mustard seeds in it. It didn’t taste mustardy, but it gave the burgers a great taste. Topped the burgers with some bacon too. It was a fantastic meal. It was fresh. It felt right. I know remember the joys of eating healthy.

So that’s it for tonight. Sorry this is such a late post. My computer has the Y2K. See ya tomorrow.

Day 563: A Random Post That Has Nothing to do With Weight Loss

I know, I know. I should be writing about Mayo and Weick right now, but if I have to write one more sentence of this paper, my soul will officially be sucked out of my body (good thing I’m not feeling melodramatic or anything.) Anyway, so I made a Finals Montage Music playlist on Spotify and I ask for song suggestions. The best (or at least the most obscure) was “Knuck if you Buck” by the christian band Crime Mob. (Theyre on tour with Michael W. Smith right now!) and I started to think about other awesome songs from my childhood. Then I went on YouTube (because I couldn’t find it on Spotify) and found one of my favorite songs from high school.

Yes, “This is the Way we Ball” by Lil Flip. My boy Brandon would always play it on his tuba at the end of every pep rally. It was awesome. To make things more awesome, I met Lil Flip’s lawyer at the Texas State Capitol in Austin one time. He pulled up in a Lamborghini and showed off his car. Ridiculous I know, but still true. Alright, I needed to get some creative juices out. A real blog tonight at some point. Now, time to bust out a paper that’s due in 23 hours.

Day 562: Monday Stuff

I love to write, but I wish fate didn’t know that. You see I have a 20 page paper due on Wednesday night and my efforts have been minimized thanks to a crazy weekend . Anyway, so with that being said, I will keep this concise (the way I’ve been taught to write for the past seven years.)

In other news, I just bought a garnet and gold bow tie for graduation. This is actually happening.

Breakfast: I just had two waffles with peanut butter and a cut up banana. Awesomeness.

Lunch: We were lucky to both be home at the same time for lunch today so Megan decided to make a delicious lunch. A while back, our awesome friend Andrea suggested to try gnocchi some time. So we took some of our fresh basil and rosemary from our herb garden, added a little olive oil and garlic and created a beautiful masterpiece of deliciousness. It was only six points which is not bad at all! We then split some pineapple. It was a super filling lunch!

Snack and stuff: After my last Korzenny class ever 🙁 I stopped by Megan’s Old Time Ensemble just to say hi. Little did I know that Sarah the Stud had made her grandma’s carrot cake recipe. It was fantastic. I also had two little sandwich rolls and then a few rice krispy treats. Yum.

Dinner: Tonight, I tried a Healthy Choice sweet and spicy chicken. I was so impressed with how good it was! Then consensus is that Healthy Choice meals are a gamble at the beginning.

So overall, today was really good! I was good with my food and I ate my share of fruits and veggies. Good times. See ya tomorrow.

Day 558: Thursday and Stuff

Hello!

I love all of you. There, I said it.

I still can’t believe my Facebook Page got to 200+ Likes last night!

This week I was feeling a little sluggish and lazy. Luckily I was able to pull myself out of it and have an awesome day! Good things. Alright, let’s get at it.

Breakfast: This morning, as per usual, we went to Atomic Coffee before class and school and stuff. I just had a bagel with butter and a little honey. It was fantastic and filling. Awesomeness.

Lunch: Today I had to go to a luncheon for a class. I walked from campus uphill both ways (yes, like your parents did when they were kids) to the downtown Double Tree. The menu had a lot of awesome healthy choices, but I was still thinking about getting something a little heavier. That was when my friend Andrew (the Edward Cullen lookalike) told the whole I was his dietician and then asked for a healthy option. It was the conviction I needed to make a much better decision. I ended up getting a grouper sandwich and instead of fries I got a salad with honey mustard. It was delicious, but it was also hard to conceal my picture taking ability in front of a bunch of strangers. When I got home I had a 100 calorie Klondike ice cream sandwich that was awesome. Then I ate two servings of chips.

Awesome Non Scale Victory: So today I was organizing my old fat clothes in order to sell them online (anyone want size 54 khakis or some really nice XXL polo t-shirts?) and then I found these bad boys. I bought these plaid shorts a few weeks before I started grad school. It was like folding up an American flag. Those things are huge. I was huge. Anyway, I held them up, thought for a second, and then got in one of the leg holes. They fit me in the waist. I know I’m not half them man I used to be, but I am making awesome progress. It was seriously the motivation I needed to get focused on losing weight. It also made me proud because this kind of picture is usually in an infomercial for some weight loss cookie or some shake that tastes like ground up chalk. This is proof that all you need is a healthier diet, a good pair of running shoes, a little patience and a persistent attitude. Oh yeah, and a bunch of awesome supportive friends doesn’t hurt either ;).

SAWS:So after that moment of NSV clarity, I decided I needed to keep it up so I can no longer fit in my current clothes and went to the gym. It’s kind of sad because it was one of my last times working out at Leach. I’ve burned a ton of calories in that place. Anyway, I wanted to keep up the same intensity I had when I was working with Joe so I went after it. I divided my hour into three 20 minute segments. The first 20 I did a circuit that involved stairs, burpees, box jumps, jump squats, push ups and running up and down stairs. It was awesome. Then, I got on the ARC Trainer and did 20 minutes on the weight loss setting which was a hill climb pattern of awesomeness. Finally, I did 20 minutes of abs. Elevated sit ups, this weird leg lift row and then holding a plank position. I felt like I made really good use of my hour, I did what I came there to do: sweat through my shirt.

Late Night Dinner: After staying on campus to try to get some work done, Megan and I went through the drive thru at Jimmy John’s (the only thing faster than their delivery dudes) and had a Turkey Tom sans mayo and a nice layer of avocado spread. Not to mention their classic pickle. The healthiest drive thru around.

So that was my day. Not too shabby. Although I didn’t write them down, I’m definitely back in the mindset of counting points and being better about what I eat. I was looking at an older post and I realized it took me 4 months to lose the last 15 pounds to break the 100 pound mark. It was because I was kind of a slacker and wasn’t strict with my points. With my new-found love for weight lifting, sticking with my points should be the perfect recipe for some serious weight loss. If anything my body would feel better, and isn’t that what it’s all about? See ya tomorrow.

Day 556: Tuesday Town! (Like Taco Town But Better)

(In case you didn’t get the reference…)

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/player.swf

Why hello everyone! I am in between paragraphs of this ginormous case study I am working on so I thought now would be a got of time as any to update you on life.

But a few things first!

First of all, I have surpassed the 150 Likes mark on my Facebook page! Hooray! Congrats to member No. 150: Paula! Thanks for reading and being such an awesome supporter of the blog. I also need to thank Keith (Like No. 149) for letting me now we were that close to such awesomeness! [Insert shameless Facebook page plug here] if you aren’t a Liker? (is that it?) yet on Facebook, stop by and like the page. There is always something funny, helpful or bizarre on there. We have something for everyone. (You’re still here? Go on! Go! Leave! And go Like the Facebook page!)

I WILL MAKE YOU A DEAL!

As of now, (11:04 pm) my page has 158 Likes. If I have 200 Likes by Wednesday at 10:00 pm EST, I will thank every person who likes the page by first name on my Wordless Wednesday video. Challenge accepted? Then start sharing!

OKAY…

Back to business. It’s Megan’s birthday! My beautiful bride is a quarter centurion while not looking a day over XXIV. Megan, even though you share with birthday with Tim Storhoff, Kraft Macaroni n’ Cheese and John Madden, you are still my favorite April 10th birth!

Food time!

Breakfast:I knew today was going to be a doozie of long day, so I went to Atomic Coffee this morning and had the Six Twenty Five sandwich without the garlic mayo. The avocado wasn’t quite ripe, but it was incredibly delicious.

Lunch: Didn’t happen. The sandwich held me over until 4:30 when my stomach decided to mosh with my other organs in defiance.

Dinner: Tonight, we decided at the last minute to go to Mellow Mushroom with our friends Catherine, Tristan and Julie to celebrate Megan’s birth of awesomeness. (Funny story, one of the first pictures of Megan and I was from her 20th birthday when were in college in Abilene. I’ll go on a Facebook scavenger hunt and put it in Wordless Wednesday tomorrow.) Anyway, tonight was $5 calzone night and the waitress suggested adding pepperoni to that bad boy. I had to try it and it was magical. I’ll probably never do it again (the whole extra calories thing) but since I hadn’t really eaten anything at that point, it was worth a shot. Our table also split the bruschetta plate which was awesome too.

Post Dinner: A little later after we got home, I finished off the wings from Harry’s on Sunday.

So at this point I am full. No midnight snacking for this kid. I was also proud of myself because when I went to Pitaria last night I only ate 3/4 of my pita. I realized I was full so I put a napkin over the remainder of my pita, got on my iPhone and totally forgot about the rest of it! I was really proud of myself. While I didn’t do that tonight, I’m going to really try to leave food on my plate for the remainder of the week and beyond. I need to get out of the “make sure you clean your plate” mindset. When I was a kid, I felt like that was the only thing I was good at. It’s a notion that I need to shake because waste makes waste.

Anyway, good luck on the challenge! Time to get to it! See ya tomorrow.

Day 553: Saturday Things and Stuff

Why hello.

I have been kind of busy/stressed/exhausted lately. School is driving me nuts. Up to this point, I haven’t been my weight loss on the back burner, but looking back at this semester, I really have. This whole semester, I have only lost something like 5 pounds. I haven’t been able to maintain a constant weight loss at all. I get a second wind every once in a while, but then I fall off. I’m hoping after things will slow down after graduation, but at this point I’m going to try to keep my head above water.

Breakfast: Before my workout, I had two pieces of peanut butter toast. It was delicious.

Workout: Today was my last training session with Joe. Not gonna lie, I was a little depressed. I feel like I have learned so much from him in such a short amount of time. It’s nice that I finally have a regiment to go off of to get ripped… or something. So today we ended with a bang: super circuit with plenty of upper body followed by a few core exercises. I am completely sore. It was an awesome workout (but then again when are workouts not awesome?)

Lunch: This afternoon, we went over to our friend Christian’s house for a musicology party! Christian, our dear vegetarian friend, is a pretty epic cook and when we got there he had already made some delicious food. He made a veggie burger made with pinto beans and other awesomeness. He also wok fried some cauliflower and onions so I got the awesome idea to put said cauliflower and onions on my burger. I was impressed by its awesomeness. After that, I had my share of chips, hummus and other snacks.

Dinner: We were stuffed so we just had microwavable dinners. I had this healthy choice that was severely disappointing. (Maybe I didn’t cook it enough… it was still clucking.) The dessert was okay, but like I said it was a little weird.

So that’s about it. Like I said, it just feels like I’m running through quicksand. I need to get out of this funk. I have the workout down, so I need to get the food back in line to get back to the weight loss stud that I am. See ya tomorrow.

Day 541: Redemption Monday

So yesterday was bad. I ate 4 bowls of cereal and 3 slices of pizza. It was rough. I’m not really sure what the deal was. Today, I knew that I needed to do better. And. I. Rocked. It!!!!

I was really proud of how I did. It’s proof that you can have bad days in your weight loss journey (they are bound to happen) and then you can bounce right back and do well the next day. My advice is to let yourself be a little wompy, then brush that dirt off your shoulder, and get back at it! Alright, let’s talk food.

Breakfast: I was running a little late this morning, so I threw two waffles in the toaster and well all nom nom on them on the way to work. They were only 3 points. It was a surprisingly filling breakfast. It held me over for at least a couple of hours which was impressive because I was full as I usually am with a 7 point breakfast. I really need to figure out my breakfast plan of attack. Maybe more fruits like bananas…

Lunch: So here is where the real turning point of the day weight loss wise happened. I didn’t bring a lunch with me and I had already been up to the vending machine in Westcott (it’s really hidden, like the Secret Garden, except without the sick kid) and bought a granola bar. I knew if that was my going to be my only lunch, I would end up eating something I would regret later in the day. So, I got on the Jimmy John’s website, took a look at their sandwich builder thingy, and started to play around to find a sandwich that wouldn’t dominate my points and/or my waistline. I came across the Turkey Tom which, without the mayo, is really low in fat! I decided to add their avocado spread for my condiment and went with that. It was only 331 calories and 1.5 grams of fat! That was only 7 points! Way better than what I usually get there and I was just as full. If you go to Jimmy John’s, definitely play around with their sandwich builder. You will be shocked the difference a few simple modifications will do to cut your calories. (The mayo alone is 193 calories and 21 grams of fat!)

Snack: I ended up eating that granola bar this afternoon because I was going to eat dinner until around 8ish. It held me over really well. In answer to your question, yes, this was taken in class and yes, I was caught by Deborah and Lauren when I was taking it. You caught me girls!4 points.

Snack: Before I started dinner, I had a small bowl of corn flakes. At that point I was pretty hungry. Am I the only one who likes their corn flakes a little soggy? Not mushy, but to the point the wet to crunchy ratio is high? Just curious. 3 points.

Dinner: Tonight, Megan taught me how to make that delicious Creamy Stovetop Mac n’ Cheese that she makes every once in a while! When we were at World Market last week (aka our second home) I found these Adventures of TinTin pasta that were shaped like different forms of transportation. The giant bag was on clearance for 75 cents so I had to get it! So, if you were like me growing up (yes, I am only talking to those who were obese children who lived on the snowy plains of Canada) our family didn’t get the mac n’ cheese shaped like cool things. We were an elbow family. In fact, come to think of it, the only time I can remember eating cool-shaped mac n’ cheese was when we went to our friend’s house and they had Mario shaped noodles. It’s incredibly sad that I still remember that. I’m making it sound like I grew up in the book Angela’s Ashes. What the crap am I talking about? Oh yeah… ANYWAY! We made our mac n’ cheese with the cool shapes and I felt like a kid again. It was just as good as I always imagined. For a serving and a half and a glass of dark chocolate almond milk, dinner was 11 points.

So that was today. I got to 28 points exactly! Hooray! I’m back on track, and it feels great. See ya tomorrow.
